HISTORY
Department of Foreign Languages of Yerevan Gladzor University was founded in 1991. Since its foundation the Chair of the Department was A.Sh.Tarverdian, soon afterwards I.H.Aidinyan carried it till 2001. From 2001 to 2005 Department was led by l.H. Hovhannisian, PhD, and since 2005 the Chairwoman of Foreign Languages Department was L.A.Antonian, PhD in Education. At present E.T.Minasian, PhD, is in the charge of the Department.
Foreign Languages Department (English, Translation Studies, Language, Culture and Communication) is designed to prepare specialists with a broad training in most aspects of contemporary linguistics, language and culture, second language acquisition, theory and methods of language teaching, theory of translation, sociolinguistics, etc.
Department of Foreign Languages with English major, translation studies (Undergraduate Program), and Language, Culture and Communication (Graduate Program) boast faculty of professionals who lead an active intellectual life. Faculty is comprised of 17 professors: 4 having PhD, 3 have received high degree in Language Teaching, and others are ranked as senior lecturers.
The crucial moment in the history of faculty was the process of accreditation when Ministry of
Education and Sciences carried out a series of verifications and tastings to give official approval for the achievements of required educational standards, i.e. high-level proficiency in languages and thorough knowledge in language teaching theory, as well as other related courses.
Faculty of Foreign Languages is comprised of programs: Undergraduate Program in English and Translation (2006-2007), Master’s Program in Culture, Communication and Translation, and Post-Graduate Program in Romance-Germanic Languages, hereby Bachelor Degree, Master’s Degree and PhD (Doctor of Philological Sciences) are awarded.
The Undergraduate Program in English is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in teaching English to speakers of other languages. The Program combines both theory and practice thoroughly elaborated in up-dated syllabuses.
The Undergraduate Program in translation focuses on translation studies, practical English-Armenian and Armenian-English translation covering literary, technical, scientific fields, etc.
The Master’s Program in Culture, Communication and Translation (leading to master’s Degree) combines academic and professional work, with the objective of promoting the application of theory and research to contemporary issues and practices in communication and culture with a strong emphasis on translation. In addition, students will pursue the study of one area in depth through the further coursework and thesis research.
In the last 18 years the faculty had many undergraduates with the qualification of linguist-teacher, achieving not only excellent proficiency of English, but also deeper understanding of contemporary language teaching methods, as well as English and American cultures.
The Post-Graduate Program in Romance-Germanic Languages is designed to prepare professionals carrying research works and pursuing candidacy of Philological Sciences. Currently, 5 undergraduates are carrying out Post-Graduate research works.
