Department of International Relations of Yerevan “Gladzor” University was formed in 1991, as one of the founding Departments of the University, the year when the university was founded. The first Dean of the department was A.S.Sarguissian, Ph.D..
“Gladzor” was one of the first private universities, which was opened not long after Armenia gained its Independence. Very soon the Chair of History and International Relations began functioning and until 2007 was headed by Professor H.V. Hakobian, Ph.D (1927-2009). Since 2007 to present the head of the chair is L.H.Hovhanessian, Ph.D. The Chair of History and International Relations is named after its founder H. V. Hakobian.
The purpose of the department is to equip students for various demands of a changing world. Its goal is to help students acquire thorough understanding of world issues and a working command of foreign languages. To achieve the goal, a wide range of courses are offered in such fields as Political Science, Economics, International Law, Social Psychology, Armenian and World History, History of Diplomacy, Ethics, Cultures and Languages.
The Faculty has outstanding researchers and educators on its teaching staff. Some have produced brilliant scholastic achievements in their respective specialties, while others have years-long experience of working with students. At present the staff of the faculty is comprised of ten professors: there of them are Doctors of History, professors, while seven are Ph.D.
The Faculty got its accreditation by the Ministry of Education and Science after carrying out series of verifications and testing to give official approval for the achievement of required educational standards, i.e. high-level proficiency in the target subject and thorough knowledge in the main and related courses.

Undergraduate Programme: The course is related through an emphasis on history and political concepts. It involves around history and provides students with the historical learning and conceptual vocabulary essential to appreciating the interplay between national and international contexts, especially in relation to the development of democracy. The course concentrates on the historical development of the international system from the Cold War to the making of the modern world in the twentieth-first century with emphases on global production and global governance as well as on war and security.
This course provides students with an interesting range of events and concepts that help to explain the nature of politics and governance during Centuries.
Master’s Programme: This is a broadly-based course of study designed for students who wish to gain a wide understanding of the theory, structure and working of the modern international system. It aims, first, to provide all students with a basic grounding in the theory of international relations and the different approaches that may be taken to the subject and, second, to enable students to gain a more detailed knowledge of those aspects of international relations in which they wish to specialize.Post-Graduate Programme: During this period, students take a number of courses, taught both within the Department and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, covering research skills and key concepts, theories and approaches in the sub-field in which they intend to write their thesis. Preparation for the thesis entails writing a literature review or other relevant piece of work and preparing a detailed research proposal.
During its 18-year existence the faculty had 379 alumni with the qualification of historian-internationalists.
