ARMENAIN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

Faculty of Armenian Language and Literature, Yerevan Gladzor University, started in 2006. The objectives of founding the department were rooted in the necessity to prepare highly qualified specialist in the very sphere, as well as to promote the development of the Armenian educational system and to have direct impact on the challenge of educating competent citizens.
Presently, like the whole University, the faculty has the three-degree system։ Bachelor, Master and Doctorial Courses. BA is four years, MA and Doctorial Courses - two years.  
Bachelor Degree Curriculum consists of the following subjects divided into humanities, social-economic, principal and elective courses:

  • Armenian Language and Speech Culture
  • Linguistics
  • Pedagogical fundamentals
  • History of the Armenian Language
  • History of the Armenian Literature
  • Armenian Language Methodology
  • Armenian Literature Methodology
  • Old Armenian
  • Comparative Grammar
  • Basic Linguistics
  • Armenian Stylistics
  • Theory of Literature
  • History of Foreign Literature
  • Derivation of the Armenian Language
  • Lexicology, etc.

Accordingly, Histories of Foreign and Armenian Literature involve Old/Ancient Literature, Renaissance Literature, 17-20th c. Foreign Literature, Armenian Folklore, Medieval Literature History of Contemporary Literature and Literature of Diaspora.
Humanities and Social-economic courses frame Philosophy, Cultural Studies, History of Religion, Armenian History, Aesthetics, Logics, Psychology, Law, Economics, as well Computer Skills, Fundamentals of Civil Defense and Emergency, Ecology, etc.
Foreign languages, mainly Russian and English, form the core of the curriculum. Due attention is paid to Physical Training held in well-equipped gyms by high-level trainers.
Pedagogical Practicum forms an obligatory part in the academic process giving the students an opportunity to gather experience in teaching, to evaluate their skills and enhance competence in student-teacher relations. In the scopes of Practicum they organize different events carrying cognitive-aesthetic value and encouraging interest in studying. Students are supervised by specialists directing their work in classrooms, and then assess their participation.
Research and individual works are compulsory and effective methods improving students’ analytical thinking and writing skills. Works deserving high marks later are awarded in Students’ Scientific Sessions.  Future linguists practice their creative writing skills in “New Gladzor” monthly newspaper.
University Library loaded with a great array of literature broadens their minds; Phonetic Laboratories improve listening-speaking skills; Computer Halls and Electronic Library provide them with free use of Internet resource data, thus preparing skilled specialists.
Faculty Staff comprise of qualified specialists with awards who not only deliver lectures but also carry out scientific research works.
The head of the department is A. Papoyan, Doctor/Professor of Linguistics. Current procedures are completed by the laboratory assistant.
